National peak body for carers

We are a registered national charity established in the 1990s to support New Zealand’s 490,000+ family, whānau, and aiga carers of friends and family members who are ill, have disabilities, need assistance in old age, or who have a mental illness or addiction.

Our National Carer Resource Centre is based in Auckland, servicing a ‘network of networks’ of thousands of individual carers and charitable, community, and service organisations across the country.

We operate an 0800 helpline during business hours, an email hotline, and maintain a one stop information portal for carers at

Carers NZ is the Secretariat for the NZ Carers Alliance, a coalition of 45+ national not for profits established in 2004 to build awareness of family caring and to encourage good decision-making for carers.

We have worked with business associations, employers, trades unions, working carers, international carer peak bodies, and many others to build CareWise – one of the world’s first carer friendly workplace programmes.
